COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas marks its 30th anniversary with several events—one featuring a fireside chat with Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and Walmart U.S. COO Kieran Shanahan scheduled for April 30 at Rogers Convention Center from 10 a.m. to noon. The nonprofit, which made its first mentor match in December 1995, expects 400 community members to attend and plans additional celebrations throughout the year.  NWA Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hannah Shankman starred as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl at Walton Arts Center where on opening night she captivated the audience with her talent and vulnerability—sharing key scenes with Melissa Manchester. The musical runs through March 23 with a 15-minute intermission and lasts two hours and 40 minutes.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The Arkansas Air & Military Museum in Fayetteville will host Warbirds, Wings & Wheels on March 22nd and 23rd, offering tours of historic aircraft such as That’s All Brother and Yellow Rose, a classic car show, and static exhibits. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fourth-grade students from Bernice Young Elementary School in Springdale learned where food comes from as they harvested carrots for a snack at Apple Seeds Teaching Farm in Fayetteville Tuesday—program educators led the garden lesson focused on the difference between processed and unprocessed food. The hands-on activity gave the students a clear view of how food grows and is prepared.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On March 19th, the Arkansas Senate approved a bill that would let voters decide next year whether to let the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission issue up to $500 million in bonds for water, waste disposal, and pollution abatement facilities—legislators said the move clears the way for the statewide plan.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fayetteville-based SFC Fluidics Inc. is teaming with Duracell U.S. Operations Inc. to develop a compact power system for its Gemini patch pump that delivers insulin and glucagon to manage diabetes. The collaboration — focused on boosting battery efficiency in a small device — will work toward a marketed artificial pancreas in the U.S.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kennedy Smith drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the top of the fifth and later made a clutch defensive catch for a double play as Springdale Har-Ber defeated Bentonville West 7-3 in a Class 6A-West softball game Tuesday night.
