On Thursday afternoon, Arkansas submitted its request to the federal government to add a work requirement to the state's Medicaid expansion program—accompanying responses to comments in opposition to the proposal.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that after two decades of chronic prison bed shortages — which have forced violent offenders into under-equipped county jails and risky early releases — the state will build a new 3,000-bed prison in Franklin County to boost public safety.

The state has set aside funds to start the project, and the Legislature must now appropriate the full cost.
