COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fayetteville-based Cobblestone Farms will host its Cultivating Community fundraiser at 6 p.m. on Sept. 18 at the Barn at the Springs in Springdale for over 250 people. The event (featuring a farm-to-table dinner and Walmart leaders Kyle Kinnard and Seth Malley as speakers) will support sustainable efforts to fight hunger.  NWA Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kansas man, 40-year-old Mark Oxford, was arrested on April 9th in connection with the 2023 death of inmate David Thompson—an altercation occurred in a Benton County Jail cell—and his arraignment is set for 8 a.m. May 19th while he is held on $80,000 bond on suspicion of manslaughter and battery.  KNWA
  • A DoorDash driver stole a K9 memorial statue from outside the Benton County Sheriff’s Office on April 9 and returned it on April 10 after being caught on camera, and officers are now pursuing legal action for tampering with county property — the statue now stands in its rightful place.  KNWA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Arkansans helped create an art show called Porch: An Architecture of Generosity at the U.S. Pavilion in Venice, which will open May 10. The exhibition displays 54 porch-inspired designs that encourage community connection—drawing on ideas from local experts in Northwest Arkansas.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Arkansas State Board of Education approved a 30-day suspension and two-year probation for Cutter Morning Star Superintendent Nancy Anderson after finding she broke ethics rules linked to enrollment mistakes from a past partnership with All Children's Academy; her suspension runs June 1–30 and she must finish training in business management and fiscal planning.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced in late March that twelve HHS grants were terminated in Arkansas to save $1.8 billion yearly—affecting over $365 million in CDC funds for the ADH and a $3 million NIH grant to UAMS for a study on structural racism. The ADH spokesperson said the terminated grants were always temporary, and the department is adjusting to the changes.  KNWA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Arkansas ranked 47th in the 2024 State Scorecard on Women's Health and Reproductive Care — a ranking that comes as the state struggles with a high maternal mortality rate and the second-highest infant mortality rate, putting mothers at serious risk.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
