GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arkansas lawmakers voted for House Bill 1685 that will eliminate the state 0.125% grocery tax — a move expected to return nearly $10.9 million to taxpayers each year. The law will expand liability protections to food banks and take effect on January 1 if Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signs it — an effort aimed at easing grocery costs.  4029 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAMS and Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville got approval to start neurology and emergency training programs in Northwest Arkansas and will begin recruiting new doctors this fall. The programs will start with two neurology and six emergency residents in July and could grow to have eight and 18 spots respectively—aiming to ease the region's growing need for special care.  NWA Business Journal

  • After 16 seasons with the Farmington Cardinals girls basketball team and four state titles, head coach Brad Johnson has accepted an assistant coach position with Arkansas women's basketball (joining head coach Kelsi Musick's staff). He will help with scouting and on-court work for the Razorbacks.  5 News
  • South Carolina transfer forward Nick Pringle has signed with Arkansas men’s basketball. Pringle—standing 6-10 and weighing 220 pounds—was the first transfer to ink this offseason and averaged 9.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 32 games with the Gamecocks.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The Arkansas Razorbacks won Tuesday's eight-inning, run-rule game over UA-Pine Bluff with a walk-off hit by Reese 'Big Country' Robinett, boosting their record to 33-5. Today, the team opens an SEC series against Texas A&M at 7 p.m. at Baum-Walker Stadium—coach Dave Van Horn confirmed a shift in the starting rotation with Zach Root set to pitch the opener.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • The Arkansas Razorbacks added transfer big men forward Nick Pringle and center Malique Ewin Tuesday to fill gaps from center Jonas Aidoo’s eligibility end and forward Zvonimir Ivisic’s transfer. Pringle averaged 9.5 points and 6.3 rebounds at South Carolina while Ewin, who averaged 14.2 points and 7.6 rebounds at Florida State, boosts the roster as coach John Calipari works to complete team needs.  Fayetteville Flyer
