  • Dozens gathered in Fort Smith on Saturday night to honor Justin Baker, a veteran and father who went missing on January 24 after his vehicle crashed into the Arkansas River in Sequoyah County—his family and community volunteers continue the search with help from a GoFundMe campaign that raised nearly $1,900. They remain determined to bring him home through ongoing search efforts.  5 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Quiet Riot, the heavy metal band that topped the Billboard 200 in 1983 (with their album Metal Health), will perform free for fans 21 and older at Lee Creek Tavern in Cherokee Casino & Hotel in Roland at 8 p.m. May 2. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed HB1724 into law on April 10, which moves school board elections to the Preferential Primary so voters can pick local school leaders when most non-partisan races occur—this change adds term options and more transparency rules. Other bills now require schools to post board member details and allow public comment at meetings.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Arkansas has the highest percentage of urban tree canopy west of the Mississippi River, according to TreeCanopy.us — a project of the Arbor Day Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service, and PlanIT Geo.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Sanders signed over 1,000 bills and vetoed four as the legislative session nears its May 5 end. She vetoed bills on medical marijuana delivery, student mental health programs, a $190,000 salary for a DEI administrator at UA Little Rock, and on delaying patients’ access to records (she said the bills would expand access or cause delays).  KNWA
  • Arkansas' 95th General Assembly approved Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders' top priority — a measure to overhaul the state's higher education system — and also passed bills to ban affirmative action in state and local governments as well as limit recovery for past necessary medical care costs.   • The University of Arkansas baseball team beat Florida 7-0 at Condron Family Ballpark in Gainesville on Saturday by limiting the Gators to two hits through seven innings.   • Arkansas Razorback Isaac TeSlaa impressed NFL scouts with strong performances in the bowl game and combine — he was drafted by the Detroit Lions on Friday night — and he will play 147 miles from his hometown.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
