ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Big Lake Wilderness—Arkansas's smallest federally designated wilderness area at 2,100 acres—is part of the Big Lake Wildlife Refuge created in August 1915 by President Woodrow Wilson to protect native and migratory birds. Visitors can begin their adventure at the refuge visitor center off Arkansas 18 where they receive maps and learn about the area's rich wetland forest history.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at Oklahoma State University warn cattle producers that the Asian Longhorned Tick can cause deadly blood loss in cattle by reproducing quickly; the pest has been found in many states including Arkansas. They advise ranchers to check their animals regularly and call a veterinarian if the tick is spotted.  KNWA
  • A University of Arkansas study in Fayetteville will use funds from a 2022 settlement with an electronic cigarette company to research teen smokeless tobacco use — focusing on how social media influencers may affect youth habits.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
