COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 18th annual Dream Big Charity Gala was held at Fayetteville Town Center and featured a circus theme with acrobatic acts, carnival games and a live auction to raise funds for the Children’s Safety Center that helps children affected by abuse in Washington County. Organizers said the event was crucial given upcoming state and federal funding cuts—local donations will help keep free services available for kids.  4029 News
  • Yesterday at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, the Samaritan Community Center hosted its Backpacks for Kids event that handed out 3,000 backpacks filled with new, grade-appropriate school supplies while community partners provided food, haircuts, games, and bicycles—helping families prepare for the school year. The group will distribute an additional 1,000 backpacks to 10 high-poverty schools to further support local students.  5 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Two people—one 41-year-old woman and one 43-year-old man—were found dead on a walking trail at Devil’s Den State Park Saturday afternoon, and state police are investigating a suspect described as a white male in dark shorts and a dark tank top driving a black, four-door sedan with a license plate covered in tape.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Arkansas tourism grew through 2024 with 52 million visitors—a 2.6% increase over 2023—and reached a record economic impact of $10.3 billion. Officials said outdoor recreation is a key factor in supporting the state's $17.4 billion tourism industry.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fayetteville hosted a water resources conference on July 24 where experts said growing demand for river access for swimming, kayaking, and floating needs more regional and state support. Leif Kindberg of the Illinois River Watershed Partnership said stronger cooperation from local and state agencies is needed to meet that demand.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • At a Fayetteville water issues conference on July 24th, Leif Kindberg from the Illinois River Watershed Partnership said that rising population has increased the demand for river access for swimming, kayaking, and floating—experts urged regional and state cooperation to expand these recreational options. HEALTH NEWS

  • UAMS recruited 50 expectant mothers from 41 counties who are expected to give birth before Dec. 1 to join a doula training program that offers free birth support services in exchange for helping doulas meet certification requirements. The six-month course provides live birth support, training hours, and six months of mentorship—aiming to increase certified doulas in rural areas.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas law Act 396 will allow ivermectin to be sold over the counter beginning Aug. 5 — however, pharmacists remain unsure if an FDA-approved product with proper labeling will be available due to federal rules. Lawmakers and pharmacy experts say the new regulation creates uncertainty in drug sales until clear federal guidelines emerge.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • On Sept. 6, the Razorbacks will meet Arkansas State at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock for the first game between the state’s two largest universities with kickoff at 3:15 p.m. The historic contest—potentially the final Razorbacks game in Little Rock if venue plans change—is drawing interest as some seating sections are sold out while others remain available for $40 to $70.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
