COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Masa Williams of Lincoln and her daughter Rowan age 10 carried fencing on Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Fayetteville to set up a meat goat barn for the upcoming fair from Aug. 19–23—Rowan will show her meat goats for the first time at the fair. Lincoln youth Duke Zaccanti, age 11, helped clean a cattle barn on Saturday at the fairgrounds and will show his dairy cattle at the fair.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • 70-year-old Toni Seavern (a former state Department of Human Services worker) became homeless after retirement because high housing costs and stagnant Social Security payments left seniors vulnerable. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Central States opened a 105,000-square-foot plant in Springdale on Aug. 7 that cost $24M and will make metal building systems—creating 50 jobs this year with potential to rise to 140 with a second shift.  KNWA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Springdale Public Schools began enforcing its 'bell to bell, no cell' policy on Aug.4 by having students store their phones in charging lockers; Superintendent Cleveland said staff and parents support the change despite some student complaints. The district faces funding challenges from high compliance costs and will form an AI task force, upgrade facilities such as rebuilding Westwood Elementary — and awaits a court ruling on its Ten Commandments display.  KNWA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Blake Johnson presented a bill in March to install a monument on Capitol grounds to honor Hoxie's work in school integration — the proposal sparked an unusual debate on the Senate floor.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Last month, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders took to X to announce a pay plan overhaul that gave state police a 20.7% raise and corrections officers a 38.9% raise—officials say the move applies to all executive branch workers.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Siloam Springs planning staff are updating the zoning and development code and are asking elected officials if they want to add a new state law. A workshop on Act 595 was held on July 29.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin announced the launch of Operation Robocall Roundup on August 10th as part of a nationwide effort to stop illegal robocalls—he and 50 other attorneys general sent warning letters to 37 voice providers urging them to block the calls.  4029 News
