COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NorthWest Arkansas Community College will host its Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event on Oct.1 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Bogle Plaza on the Bentonville campus—participants will walk a mile in donated high heels to raise awareness of domestic and sexual violence and receive raffle prizes from local businesses.  KNWA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Northwest Arkansas Land Trust announced that 62 acres on Beaver Lake in the Sonora community east of Springdale is now protected under a conservation easement. Landowner Jacklyn Perry Ryan donated the easement—committed to preserving her family legacy—and the Beaver Water District supported the move to keep the land agricultural and secure clean source water.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington County officials unveiled a new Emergency Operations Center on Wednesday to boost disaster response and ensure backup communications during emergencies—County Judge Patrick Deakins said the hardened facility will host training sessions and coordinate first responders.  4029 News
  • Washington County held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 24 for its new $9 million Emergency Operations Center in Fayetteville — a facility built with redundant systems to support emergency management and first responder coordination. The center will serve county officials and local responders during natural disasters and other incidents.  KNWA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Arkansas Children’s Northwest announced its $82.7M expansion will open fall, adding 50,000 square feet of finished space and 23,000 square feet of renovated space to offer new operating rooms, a procedure room and an endoscopy suite. The hospital said the project — featuring a redesigned lab and expanded outpatient specialties like neurology and cardiology — will support increased patient care for local children.  KNWA

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • At a public meeting in Springdale on Wednesday, project leader Matt Lambert of DPZ CoDesign said proposals to add more housing units per acre in Northwest Arkansas will not push development to extreme density—he assured the 20 attendees that the plan calls only for modest changes. The regional growth strategy will continue to shape future housing affordability efforts.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • University of Arkansas cornerback Kani Walker practiced on Tuesday and is improving each day; he may return to the game against Notre Dame on Saturday as coach Sam Pittman said players are listed as probable or questionable based on their health—upholding the team's integrity. Offensive guard Fernando Carmona was named a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy, which honors the country's top scholar-athlete as the team prepares for its next challenge.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas basketball will revive its season-tipoff celebration called Primetime at the Palace on Oct. 3 at Bud Walton Arena starting at 8 p.m. The free event will feature a dunk contest, a men’s scrimmage, giveaways, and a laser show with free parking on a first-come, first-served basis — reviving a tradition from Nolan Richardson’s era.  Fayetteville Flyer
