High turkey prices and low production are straining food banks nationwide as they struggle to reach Thanksgiving donation goals+ a turkey plant in Springdale closed last August, worsening supplies amid a 44% price increase.
Some organizations have canceled deliveries and cut back on orders while relying on key donations to narrow the shortage.
Operation Christmas Child collected gift boxes for children in need across Arkansas from November 17 to November 24—hosted by Samaritan’s Purse—with drop-off sites noted in communities like Springdale and beyond.
The drive provided shoeboxes filled with school supplies, toys, and personal care items and aimed to serve 12 million children.
Mercy awarded $500,000 in grants to over 35 organizations, including six local groups that aid children, the elderly, the homeless and uninsured residents.
The funds will support services for more than 220,000 people through programs that expand mental health care and community support—steps designed to address key health needs.
